B-movie veteran Robert Clarke
has performed with an impressive roster of film stars
that spans every genre and budget: Gable, Karloff, Lugosi,
Chaney, Carradine, Price, John Wayne, Randolph Scott.
He also appeared in a handful of the most memorable
sci-fi films of the 1950s (which he discusses at length
in our "Toxic Monsters"
section). No other B-movie actor has credentials that
compare.
"I'd wanted to be in movies
since I was 12 years old and saw Tom Mix and Douglas
Fairbanks Sr. and Buck Jones -- and later, Gable and
Robert Taylor," he says. Arriving in Hollywood
from his native Oklahoma, it wasn't long before producers
at RKO took notice of the 24-year-old's boyish virility
and smooth delivery. "I went under contract the
same month and year as Bob Mitchum. And of course, we
all know what he's done," Clarke smiles.
