To the everlasting delight of sci
fi fans the world over, the very first film about a visitor
from space was also one of the best. Made on a shoestring
in less than a week, The Man From Planet X is one
of the era's most enduring science fiction films. Its damp
and disturbing Scottish setting is almost enhanced by the
lack of budget, as the film's makers were forced to imbue
every scene with as much handcrafted know-how as they could
muster. The pall that permeates the film's every frame is
both functional and artistic. The shadows and fog enrich
the movie's atmosphere while disguising its cheapness.
Additionally, the story is inhabited
by a stalwart cast of B film faces that fans have come to
love. Urged on by Malvin Wald, a writer and business partner
of Ida Lupino, Robert Clarke was one of over 100 actors
to audition for Planet X. He and Margaret Field were
chosen by producers Aubrey Wisberg and Jack Pollexfen from
this sea of hopefuls.
