Lori Nelson may be best known to fans as one of three
women beloved and pursued by the Creature From the
Black Lagoon (Julie Adams and Leigh Snowden being
the others). But her role opposite the Gill Man in Revenge
of the Creature, the second film in the classic
triad, came midway in the busy career of one of Universal
Studios' most promising young stars.
Shortly after arriving in Hollywood, Lori had been
placed under contract by the studio at the tender age
of 16. Contract players at the time learned the rigors
of their craft while appearing in a terrific variety
of films. "Ma and Pa Kettle at the Fair was
the very first movie I made after I was signed with
Universal," Nelson recalls. The longstanding series
of hillbilly-humor films proved to be a fertile training
gown, and Nelson prospered from her exposure to character
actors Percy Kilbride and Marjorie Main. "They
were pretty much the same characters they played on
the screen," she notes. "He was a very intelligent
man, however. Very quiet and sweet. Marjorie was rough
and gruff and boisterous."
