This Island Earth endures as one of filmdom's
most respected attempts at intelligent science fiction.
Its primary bow to convention, a lobster-clawed insectoid
mutant with a bulging, exposed brain, may have once
seemed a conciliatory gesture to bloodthirsty monster
lovers. But even the Metaluna mutant can be seen today
as integral to the film's overall success. Lush Technicolor
and smart dialogue also lend to its relative "high-brow"
standing in the genre. Likewise, the casting of a storybook-handsome,
25-year-old actor as the film's central character, Dr.
Cal Meacham, helped ensure its commercial potential.
